Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag has praised the devotional film Hanuman Ansh, saying the movie left a deep impression on him. The film, based on the life and teachings of Neem Karoli Baba, has been gaining attention at the box office through strong word of mouth.
Sehwag recently shared his thoughts about the film on Instagram and encouraged people to watch it in theatres. He spoke about his long-standing interest in Neem Karoli Baba, popularly known as Maharaj-ji, and said some of his close friends have been devotees of the spiritual figure for years.
According to Sehwag, he first heard about Neem Karoli Baba around a decade ago through one of his friends. Since then, he has read and heard more about the saint and developed a strong interest in his life, personality and teachings.
While discussing Hanuman Ansh, Sehwag said it would be difficult to capture the entire life of such a spiritual figure in a single film. However, he praised the makers for presenting what he described as a meaningful glimpse of Maharaj-ji's life.
One particular scene touched Sehwag deeply. He highlighted a sequence in which Neem Karoli Baba is surrounded by snakes. A devotee tells him that he is as innocent as Lord Shiva, to which Maharaj-ji responds that it is the devotee who is innocent because people see what exists within their own hearts.
Sehwag said the scene stayed with him because of the message behind it. He also reflected on how Neem Karoli Baba's influence continues among his followers decades after his death.
The cricketer described saints like Neem Karoli Baba as rare figures in India's history and said that while it may be impossible to completely understand such a personality, getting a glimpse of his life and teachings is possible through the film.
Hanuman Ansh was written and directed by Vishal Chaturvedi and features Chandan Anand and Shobhinav Satyaa in leading roles. The story follows a grieving boy who seeks God after losing his mother. His journey eventually leads him towards spirituality, service and compassion.
The film focuses on Neem Karoli Baba's philosophy of love, humanity, food and silent blessings. Although it opened without much buzz, positive audience reactions have helped the film build momentum after its release.
Sehwag's endorsement has now brought additional attention to the film, particularly among his large following of cricket fans and viewers interested in devotional cinema.
