Salman Khan-inspired Kala Hiran release halted by Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court has stopped the release of Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy, a film reportedly inspired by actor Salman Khan’s 1998 blackbuck poaching case. The court heard the matter on Thursday and noted that the film’s certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is still pending.

The development comes after Salman Khan had approached the court seeking protection against the release of the film. The actor had filed a personality rights suit against various unknown entities and sought restrictions on content that allegedly uses his identity and is connected to the blackbuck case.

During Thursday’s hearing, the court recorded a statement from film producer Amit Jani and his legal team. Following the proceedings, the film was not allowed to be released in theatres or on OTT platforms until the matter is considered further.

Salman Khan’s legal team also confirmed that the next hearing has been scheduled for September 30, 2026. Advocate Parag Khandhar, who is part of Salman’s legal team, said the film cannot be released before the next hearing. The defendants have also been asked to file their replies before the court.

The film is reportedly based on the controversial blackbuck poaching case involving Salman Khan and is said to explore the events surrounding the incident. According to reports, the movie also makes references to alleged links between Salman and underworld figures.

The legal dispute surrounding Kala Hiran had already begun before Thursday’s hearing. In July, the Delhi High Court had directed the removal of several online links related to the film’s teaser.

The latest order means the makers will have to wait until the legal proceedings progress before deciding on a release date. The pending CBFC certification is also an important factor in determining whether the film can eventually reach audiences.

Salman Khan’s 1998 blackbuck poaching case has remained a widely discussed chapter in his career and personal life. Any film based on the incident, particularly one that refers directly to the actor, is therefore likely to attract considerable public and media attention.

For now, Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy remains on hold, with its theatrical and OTT release blocked until at least the next hearing on September 30. The court’s further proceedings are expected to determine the next course of action for the film and its makers.
