Ramganga Nears Warning Level in Moradabad

Moradabad: Water levels in the Ramganga and Kosi rivers continued to rise in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad on Tuesday, raising concerns in low-lying areas as flood-like conditions affected several villages.

Moradabad District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia said the Ramganga had reached 189.6 metres, close to its warning level, while the danger mark stands at 190.6 metres. Fields in low-lying areas have already been inundated, and residents in some affected stretches are using boats to move through waterlogged areas.

Officials said the situation remains under close watch as both the Ramganga and Kosi continue to swell. The rising water has reached several villages, creating difficulties for residents and affecting agricultural land. Local reports also indicate that riverbank erosion and water entering farmland have added to concerns among people living in the floodplain areas.

Pensia said the administration is maintaining 24-hour vigilance and has stepped up monitoring of vulnerable areas. Officials are keeping track of river levels and the situation on the ground, particularly in villages located near the rivers.

According to the district administration, the situation could improve once the water level of the Ganga starts falling. A decline in the Ganga is expected to help bring down the levels of the Kosi and Ramganga as well.

However, officials cautioned that water may remain in villages even after the rivers begin to recede. Pensia said that when the Ramganga and Kosi remain swollen for two days, floodwater can stay in affected villages for around four days. In previous instances, water has reportedly remained in some villages for as long as two weeks.

The latest situation in Moradabad comes amid rising water levels in the Ganga and flood concerns across parts of northern India. Authorities in neighbouring regions are also monitoring river levels, embankments and vulnerable locations as the monsoon continues to affect the region.

For now, the Ramganga remains below its danger mark, but the rapidly rising water levels have prompted authorities to remain on high alert. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay cautious as officials continue to assess the situation.
