Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is being widely praised for his actions during the dramatic flydubai flight emergency in which he was allegedly attacked by his co-pilot. According to his friend and neighbour, a doctor, Machchhar’s extensive experience and “muscle memory” may have helped him respond quickly even after being seriously injured.
Jinit Shah, a urologist and a neighbour of Machchhar’s family in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area, described the pilot as a kind-hearted, mature and responsible person. He said Machchhar is a caring father of two children and has always been known for making quick decisions.
Shah also said Machchhar has considerable experience in pilot training and runs an aviation academy of his own. According to him, this repeated training and practice may have helped the pilot react almost automatically during the emergency.
“Muscle memory” refers to the ability to perform a physical movement or familiar task with little conscious thought after extensive repetition and practice. In aviation, pilots repeatedly train for emergencies so that critical procedures can become highly familiar and instinctive.
The incident occurred on a flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The aircraft, carrying 174 passengers, reportedly experienced a serious cockpit confrontation after the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar and attempted to take control of the aircraft.
The situation became extremely dangerous as the Boeing 737 MAX 8 rapidly lost altitude while flying over Saudi Arabia. Flight-tracking data showed a dramatic descent of thousands of feet within a very short period. The aircraft eventually diverted to Tabuk and landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport.
Passengers and crew members reportedly helped restrain the attacker during the confrontation. Machchhar was injured in the incident and was subsequently taken to hospital in Saudi Arabia for treatment.
Shah said Machchhar’s training and experience could have been crucial in allowing him to continue handling the aircraft despite his injuries. However, the precise sequence of actions taken by the pilot remains subject to investigation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Machchhar’s courage. In a post on X, Modi described him as a hero and said that despite being seriously injured, he showed courage and determination to protect the lives of others.
The incident has highlighted the importance of pilot training, emergency preparedness and cockpit security. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, the aircraft’s rapid descent and the actions of the pilots and passengers before the emergency landing.
For now, Captain Smit Machchhar’s extensive aviation experience and response during the crisis have placed him at the centre of global attention.
