Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin shared a warm moment at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek on Tuesday, with handshakes and smiles drawing attention during the leaders’ family photograph.
The three leaders were seen standing together as SCO members gathered for the traditional group photo at the summit venue in Kyrgyzstan. Modi exchanged a brief and friendly interaction with Xi and Putin, highlighting the importance of the gathering for the region’s major powers.
The visual came amid renewed diplomatic engagement between India and China. Modi and Xi have been maintaining contact as both sides work to stabilise relations and address outstanding differences. India has continued to emphasise dialogue, mutual respect and sensitivity while engaging with Beijing.
The SCO summit also produced another striking moment involving Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. After the official family photograph, Putin appeared to be leaving the podium when Sharif quickly moved towards the Russian president. Sharif reached out to Putin, held his hand and began speaking with him before the Russian leader left. The brief interaction was captured on video and quickly attracted attention online.
The contrasting visuals Modi's interaction with Xi and Putin, followed by Sharif's quick effort to speak with Putin became one of the most discussed informal moments from the summit.
The Bishkek meeting comes at a time of shifting geopolitical equations. India is seeking to maintain strong relations with Russia while simultaneously managing its complex relationship with China and maintaining strategic ties with the United States and other Western countries.
For Pakistan, closer engagement with Moscow has also gained importance as Islamabad seeks to strengthen economic and strategic partnerships beyond its traditional allies.
The 26th SCO Summit has brought together leaders from the organisation's member states to discuss security, connectivity, economic cooperation and regional stability. Modi has also used the summit to call for a united approach against terrorism and greater cooperation among member countries.
While a single photograph does not necessarily signal a major change in foreign policy, the moments captured in Bishkek offered a glimpse of the diplomatic choreography taking place among India, China, Russia and Pakistan at a time of growing global uncertainty.
