Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after she became Italy’s longest continuously serving prime minister in the country’s postwar history.
Calling Meloni his “friend”, Modi said the milestone reflected the trust and confidence she has earned from the Italian people. He extended his best wishes to her and praised her leadership.
In a post on X, Modi wrote that Meloni’s achievement was a significant milestone and highlighted the strong relationship between India and Italy.
The Indian prime minister also credited Meloni with playing an important role in strengthening the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership. He said he looked forward to continuing close cooperation with her to build a prosperous future for the people of both countries.
“Congratulations to my friend Prime Minister Meloni on becoming the longest continuously serving Prime Minister in Italy's postwar history,” Modi said.
He added that her friendship had been instrumental in strengthening bilateral ties and expressed hope that cooperation between the two countries would continue to grow.
Meloni became Italy’s prime minister in October 2022 after her Brothers of Italy party emerged as the largest force in the 2022 general election. Her government has since remained in office through a period of political and economic challenges, making her the longest continuously serving postwar Italian prime minister.
India and Italy have strengthened their diplomatic and economic engagement in recent years. Their relationship was upgraded to a Strategic Partnership in 2020 and later elevated to a Special Strategic Partnership during Modi’s visit to Italy in 2023.
The two countries cooperate in areas including trade, defence, technology, clean energy, infrastructure and education. Italy is also an important partner for India in its engagement with the European Union.
Modi’s latest message underlines the personal rapport that has developed between the two leaders. Their public interactions have frequently attracted attention, particularly during international summits and bilateral meetings.
In his message, Modi wished Meloni continued success in the years ahead, while reiterating India’s commitment to working closely with Italy.
The congratulatory message comes at a time when both countries are seeking to deepen their strategic and economic partnership. New Delhi has increasingly viewed Italy as an important European partner as it expands cooperation with European nations on trade, investment, defence and emerging technologies.
Meloni’s record tenure marks a notable moment in Italy’s postwar political history, while Modi’s message highlights the growing importance of India-Italy relations under her leadership.
