Mirzapur The Movie has taken the box office by storm, delivering a huge opening weekend despite concerns over whether audiences would pay to watch a story originating from a popular web series in cinemas.
The gangster drama, which hit theatres on September 4, opened strongly on Friday, collecting around ₹25 crore net. The momentum continued on Saturday as the film recorded a jump of more than 25 per cent and earned approximately ₹32 crore. Its two-day total stood at around ₹57.75 crore net.
By 6 pm on Sunday, the film had added another ₹19 crore net, taking its opening weekend collection to about ₹77 crore, according to Sacnilk figures cited by Hindustan Times. With evening and night shows still remaining, the film was expected to move closer to the ₹100-crore mark by the end of Sunday and potentially cross the milestone soon after.
The response has been particularly strong in markets such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi, which have traditionally performed well for mass-market action films. Sunday morning shows recorded occupancy of around 38 per cent, indicating that the film continued to attract audiences even after its strong first two days.
The performance is significant because Mirzapur The Movie does not rely on a conventional Bollywood superstar to draw audiences. Instead, it brings back familiar faces from the hugely popular franchise, including Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit, Pankaj Tripathi and Divyenndu.
The film's opening weekend has already put it ahead of some recent Hindi releases. Its current collection has surpassed the reported lifetime earnings of Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, which collected around ₹60 crore.
Presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment, the film is directed by Gurmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna. Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar have produced the movie under Excel Entertainment, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani serving as co-producers.
The cast also includes Ravi Kishan, Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Shweta Tripathi and several other familiar faces. Jitendra Kumar has joined the franchise as Bablu Pandit, taking over the role previously played by Vikrant Massey in the series.
With the film already nearing the ₹100-crore mark after its opening weekend, Mirzapur The Movie has delivered a strong theatrical debut and proved that a successful streaming franchise can successfully bring its audience into cinemas.
