Bristy Mukherjee, the niece of Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was found dead at her residence in Birbhum district on Tuesday, police said.
The 28-year-old was found in a room on the second floor of her family home in Kusumba village in the Rampurhat area. Police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to family members, Bristy had been undergoing treatment for depression for the past few years. Reports also said she had been facing marital issues and was reportedly going through divorce proceedings. Police have not yet officially established the cause of death, and the post-mortem report is awaited.
Bristy was the daughter of Nihar Mukherjee, who is Mamata Banerjee’s maternal cousin and a local Trinamool Congress leader. The incident has drawn attention because of her connection to the TMC chief.
Bristy had also been among those affected by the cancellation of appointments in West Bengal’s government-aided schools following court orders in the recruitment case. Her family members said she lost her job following the court’s decision.
A senior police officer said the body had been sent for post-mortem and that further investigation would establish what led to her death. Police personnel remain at the spot and are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
While some reports have indicated that police suspect suicide, authorities have not yet released a final conclusion. The exact circumstances will be known after the post-mortem and other procedural inquiries.
The incident comes amid continued legal and political fallout from the West Bengal school recruitment case, which resulted in the cancellation of thousands of appointments and affected many candidates who had secured government-aided school jobs.
