Labor Day 2026: What’s open and closed in the US

Millions of Americans are observing Labor Day on Monday, September 7, with the federal holiday marking the contributions of workers and traditionally signalling the unofficial end of summer.

Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September. It originated from the labour movement of the late 19th century, with the first official celebration held in New York City in 1882. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1894 during President Grover Cleveland’s administration.

Because Labor Day is a federal holiday, several government and financial services are closed. Federal offices, public schools, courts and most municipal offices will remain shut.

The US Postal Service (USPS) will also close post offices and suspend regular mail delivery. However, Priority Mail Express services will continue to operate.

Most banks across the country are closed on Monday, although some branches located inside stores may follow different schedules.

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq are also closed for the holiday. Regular stock market trading will resume on Tuesday, September 8.

Package deliveries are affected as well. Standard UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services are suspended on Labor Day, while some express and critical shipments may continue depending on location.

Despite the closures, most major retailers, supermarkets and pharmacies remain open. Their operating hours can vary by location.

Target is generally open from 8 am to 10 pm, while Walmart and Kroger are expected to operate from 6 am to 11 pm at many locations. Whole Foods generally operates from 8 am to 10 pm, while Trader Joe’s is open from 8 am to 9 pm.

Other retailers and grocery chains, including Aldi, Wegmans, ShopRite, Stop & Shop and Lidl, are also expected to remain open, though customers are advised to check local timings.

Several retailers are also using the holiday weekend for promotional sales. Companies such as Wayfair and Best Buy are offering Labor Day deals on categories including electronics, appliances, furniture and outdoor products.

One notable exception is Costco, which remains closed for Labor Day. Sam’s Club is operating with reduced holiday hours, while BJ’s Wholesale Club remains open under its holiday schedule.

With operating hours differing between locations, customers are advised to check individual store websites or contact their local branches before making a trip.
