Kareena-Prithviraj face off in Daayra

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran are set to share the screen for the first time in Meghna Gulzar’s upcoming crime thriller Daayra. The makers released the film’s trailer on Monday, offering a glimpse into a gripping story about crime, justice and the limits of the law.

The film features Kareena and Prithviraj as police officers DCP Ajooni Kohli and DCP Raman Kumar. The trailer revolves around a gang rape case and the controversial encounter killings that follow.

The trailer opens with a distressed mother searching for her missing daughter. It then shows Prithviraj’s character taking the accused juveniles to an isolated location and shooting them, with the incident later portrayed as an encounter.

Kareena’s character begins investigating the case and questions Raman Kumar about the encounter. She also refers to three earlier encounters carried out by him in what he claimed was self-defence.

As the investigation progresses, the police recreate the crime scene and Raman is warned about the consequences of his actions. However, he remains firm in his approach, arguing that another family has lost its daughter.

The trailer highlights a major conflict between the two characters. Kareena insists that she works within the boundaries of the law, while Prithviraj questions whether the existing legal framework can deliver justice in cases involving extremely serious crimes committed by juveniles.

One of the key moments comes when Kareena points out that one of the accused was about to turn 17. Prithviraj’s character challenges the idea of protecting such a juvenile under existing laws when the crime itself is so severe.

The trailer ultimately leaves viewers with a central question: can justice always be delivered while staying within the boundaries of the law?

Daayra is written and directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Junglee Pictures and Pen Studios. The film is inspired by true events and marks the first on-screen collaboration between Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran.

The movie is scheduled to release in theatres on September 18. According to earlier comments by lyricist Gulzar, the film will not feature songs.

For Kareena, Daayra marks her return to the big screen after her 2024 appearance in Singham Again. It is also her first collaboration with Meghna Gulzar, whose previous films include Talvar, Chhapaak and Sam Bahadur.
