Flydubai Plane Survives Dramatic Mid-Air Plunge

Aviation experts have expressed shock that a flydubai Boeing 737 MAX 8 survived an extremely rapid descent during a mid-air cockpit confrontation and managed to land safely in Saudi Arabia. The incident involved Flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 passengers from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday.

According to flight-tracking data cited by Hindustan Times, the aircraft was cruising at around 33,000 feet when it suddenly began losing altitude. At the most severe point, the plane dropped more than 14,000 feet in approximately 29 seconds. Overall, the aircraft lost around 16,000 feet in less than a minute.

The situation became even more serious because the aircraft reportedly suffered significant damage to its rudder. Aviation experts said the combination of the extreme descent and possible damage to the aircraft's control surfaces made the safe recovery particularly difficult.

Steve Arroyo, a former United Airlines pilot and aviation safety expert, told the Associated Press that he was surprised the aircraft remained intact after such a severe descent. Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti, a former investigator with the US National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration, said the aircraft had enough altitude remaining to recover from the dive.

The emergency reportedly began after an alleged confrontation inside the cockpit involving the co-pilot and Indian Captain Smit Machchhar. Israeli officials said the co-pilot attacked Machchhar and allegedly attempted to take control of the aircraft.

Passengers and crew members reportedly intervened and helped restrain the attacker. During the chaos, the aircraft experienced a violent descent that passengers described as a sudden fall accompanied by intense G-forces.

One passenger told AP that the aircraft appeared to drop suddenly for around 20 to 30 seconds. The incident caused panic among passengers, while the cockpit crew reportedly issued an emergency call and requested an urgent landing, including medical assistance.

The aircraft eventually diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia and landed at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport at around 9:45am. Both pilots were taken to hospital following the incident.

Flight-tracking data also showed the aircraft making an unusual turn near the Jordanian border before returning towards Saudi Arabia. The emergency prompted heightened security concerns, with Israel reportedly scrambling fighter aircraft amid fears that the aircraft could have been hijacked.

The exact circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation, the extent of the aircraft's damage and the motive behind the alleged attack remain under investigation. Flydubai has said it is cooperating with the authorities.

The incident has drawn renewed attention to cockpit security, pilot safety and the procedures used to protect aircraft from deliberate interference during flight.
