Delhi Police Seeks Closure of 57 Metro Stations Ahead of CJP Protest

New Delhi, October 9: Security arrangements have been tightened across the national capital ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) planned protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, October 10. The Delhi Police has asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to consider closing the entry and exit gates of 57 metro stations from Friday night, October 9, amid concerns over crowd movement and possible disruptions.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the proposed restrictions could begin at 9 pm on Friday and remain in place until Saturday, depending on the security situation. The police has also suggested reducing train frequency at the identified stations to prevent large crowds from gathering near sensitive locations.

In a letter dated October 8, the Joint Commissioner of Police, Transport Range, requested DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar to issue the necessary instructions to officers and staff to implement the proposed measures. However, the suggested closures and operational changes are subject to the metro corporation’s decisions and further instructions.

The 57 stations identified for possible restrictions are spread across central, south, north, east and northeast Delhi. Some of the prominent stations on the list include Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Mandi House, ITO, Delhi Gate, Khan Market, Supreme Court and Indraprastha.

Other stations mentioned include INA, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, Kashmere Gate, Karol Bagh, Jama Masjid, Vishwavidyalaya, Seelampur, Shahdara and Rohini West. Lok Kalyan Marg, Jor Bagh, Jangpura, Ashram, Jamia Millia Islamia, Okhla Vihar, Civil Lines, GTB Nagar, Adarsh Nagar, Jahangir Puri, Welcome, Yamuna Vihar and Rithala are also among the stations identified. INA station on both metro lines has been included in the proposed restrictions.

The police’s move comes ahead of the CJP’s proposed ‘Chalo Delhi’ march at Jantar Mantar. The party has called for a demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The revision process has triggered political controversy and protests, with opponents raising concerns about the electoral process.

Authorities are taking additional precautions to manage the expected gathering and prevent disruptions to public order. Security arrangements are also being strengthened at key locations in and around Delhi as the planned demonstration approaches.

The proposed metro restrictions could affect commuters travelling through several major interchange stations and busy commercial and administrative areas. Passengers may face inconvenience if entry and exit gates are closed or train services are reduced.

Commuters travelling on Saturday have been advised to follow official announcements from DMRC and Delhi Police before starting their journeys. Any final decision on station closures, train frequency or other restrictions will depend on the security assessment and instructions issued by the authorities.

With the CJP protest scheduled for October 10, Delhi remains on heightened alert as police prepare to manage the demonstration while maintaining security and minimising disruption to daily life.
