New Delhi, September 8: Delhi Police has urged commuters to plan their journeys in advance as the national capital prepares to host the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit from September 11 to 13. The three-day event at Bharat Mandapam is expected to bring international leaders and high-level delegations to the city, leading to temporary traffic restrictions and diversions on several important routes.
In its latest advisory issued on Tuesday, Delhi Police said traffic movement may be regulated or diverted during the movement of international dignitaries. Commuters have been asked to leave early, keep sufficient additional travel time and avoid unnecessary journeys through areas likely to witness VVIP movement.
The police have particularly advised people travelling to Indira Gandhi International Airport, railway stations and central Delhi to plan their routes carefully. Passengers have been asked to start well in advance because temporary stoppages or diversions could cause delays.
Delhi Police has also recommended using the Delhi Metro and other public transport services wherever possible. Commuters have been instructed to follow diversion routes and directions issued by traffic personnel on the ground. They have also been warned against parking vehicles on restricted roads or at unauthorised locations.
The traffic arrangements are expected to affect several major roads across central, south and southwest Delhi. Earlier advisories indicated that restrictions could cover more than 35 roads and 22 diversion points, depending on the movement of VVIP convoys. Traffic police have prepared alternate routes to manage the flow of vehicles during the summit period.
The government has also announced a holiday on September 11 for central government offices and Delhi government offices, autonomous bodies and public sector undertakings in the capital. The following two days, September 12 and 13, fall on Saturday and Sunday. The decision has been taken to reduce traffic pressure and facilitate the extensive security arrangements required for the summit.
Schools across Delhi will also remain closed on September 11, according to the latest government-related announcements, giving students a three-day break when combined with the weekend. Parents and students have been advised to check their respective schools for any specific instructions.
With foreign delegations expected to travel between the airport, hotels and the summit venue, authorities are preparing for intermittent traffic restrictions throughout the period. Police have asked residents to rely on official Delhi Traffic Police updates for real-time information.
The authorities have appealed to the public to cooperate with security personnel and avoid unnecessary travel in VVIP movement corridors to ensure the international summit passes smoothly.
