At least two crane operators were injured after a crane overturned and caught fire during cargo unloading operations at Mumbai Port on Sunday evening.
The incident took place around 7:15 pm at Green Gate, near the Cruise Terminal in Ballard Pier Estate. The vessel involved was identified as Vienna, which was sailing under the Barbados flag.
The injured workers were identified as Ranjit, the crane operator, and Nishant, his assistant. Both were taken to St George Hospital for treatment. Their current condition was not immediately available.
According to Mumbai Police, the incident occurred while a 140-metric-ton cargo was being lifted from the vessel using two cranes operated by Barkat Company.
Police said a technical failure occurred during the lifting operation. The sling attached to the cargo on one crane reportedly became imbalanced and came loose, causing the load to shift onto the second crane.
The sudden movement caused the second crane to lift off the ground. Its front telescopic boom then struck the vessel. Friction generated during the incident subsequently caused the crane to catch fire.
Following the accident, staff from the BPT fire station were immediately mobilised and sent to the spot. Firefighters brought the blaze under control and extinguished it at around 8:30 pm.
Authorities have started an investigation to determine the exact circumstances behind the crane failure and the subsequent fire.
The incident took place during routine unloading operations and caused concern at the port, given the substantial weight of the cargo involved. Officials are expected to examine the equipment, lifting process and safety procedures as part of the investigation.
Police said further details would emerge once the investigation progresses.
