High drama unfolded in the Telangana Assembly on Monday as the monsoon session began, with opposition BRS leaders protesting against the Congress government and several leaders being detained by police.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao and senior leader Harish Rao were among those detained after party leaders staged a protest at Gun Park over what they described as the Congress government's failure to deliver on its promises after 1,000 days in office.
BRS legislators also entered the Assembly wearing black clothes as a mark of protest. The party alleged that the Congress had made 420 promises before coming to power and had assured voters that they would be implemented within 100 days.
KTR accused the Congress government of making “reckless and false promises” and claimed that none of the commitments had been fulfilled even after 1,000 days.
The situation escalated when BRS leaders were stopped from entering the Assembly complex. Police detained KTR, Harish Rao and other party leaders as they attempted to continue their protest.
A video shared by news agency ANI also showed a Hyderabad City Police SWAT personnel pulling the hair of BRS MLA Sabitha Indra Reddy while she was being detained outside the Assembly premises. The incident added to the tension surrounding the protest.
The demonstration also caused traffic problems near the Telangana Assembly. A large number of BRS workers and police personnel gathered outside the complex, resulting in a traffic jam that reportedly lasted around 30 to 40 minutes.
Meanwhile, BJP MLAs raised a separate issue inside the Assembly concerning the inclusion of private lands in a prohibited list under Section 22A of the Registration Act.
The BJP demanded a discussion and a judicial probe into the matter, alleging that private properties belonging to citizens had been placed on the restricted list. Such classification can prevent registration and other property transactions.
During question hour, BJP legislators displayed placards before approaching the Speaker’s well to press their demand.
The developments came as the monsoon session began amid sharp political confrontation between the ruling Congress and opposition parties. With the BRS challenging the government over its performance and the BJP raising concerns over land records and property rights, proceedings began on a stormy note.
The protests and detentions are likely to intensify the political battle in the Assembly, with opposition parties preparing to press the government on several issues during the session.
