Chennai Super Kings are taking a patient approach to finding a successor to Stephen Fleming, who stepped down as head coach after 17 years with the franchise. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad said the management is already considering its options but sees no reason to rush the appointment.
Fleming joined CSK as a player in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 and became head coach in 2009. Under his leadership, the franchise developed one of the most successful and stable setups in the league. His departure in July brought an end to one of the longest coaching associations in IPL history.
Speaking about the vacancy, Gaikwad said CSK still have plenty of time before the next season and the mini-auction. He indicated that the franchise wants to make the right decision rather than appoint someone in a hurry.
“We will have a head coach. The management is obviously thinking about it. There is still plenty of time before the IPL, so there is no rush to make a decision,” Gaikwad said.
CSK will enter the next season looking to recover from a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign. The franchise finished eighth in the points table after winning only six of its 14 matches.
Gaikwad also spoke about the pressure of leading CSK after taking over the captaincy from the legendary MS Dhoni. The 29-year-old admitted that his responsibilities have increased significantly, particularly because of the expectations created by Dhoni’s hugely successful tenure.
“Taking over from MS Dhoni comes with a lot of responsibility because of his immense success, and naturally, there are high expectations for more wins and titles,” Gaikwad said.
Despite the pressure, the CSK captain said he remains comfortable with the role and is willing to continue as long as he enjoys the challenge.
Gaikwad also reflected on CSK’s journey since 2008 and acknowledged that the franchise is currently going through a difficult period after years of remarkable consistency. He pointed out that CSK have regularly competed for titles and urged supporters to remain patient during the rebuilding phase.
The captain said the team’s fans have stood by the franchise through its biggest successes and should continue to support the players during the current challenging period.
With the next IPL season still some time away, CSK have chosen to take a measured approach to one of their biggest decisions. The franchise now has the opportunity to carefully assess potential candidates before deciding who can carry forward the legacy left behind by Fleming.
