A building collapsed near Satya Niketan in southwest Delhi on Sunday afternoon, leaving several people feared trapped under the debris. Police said the exact number of people trapped is not yet known, while two people have so far been rescued.
The Delhi Fire Services received information about the collapse at around 1:30 pm. A PCR call was also received by the South Campus police station shortly after, reporting the incident near Nanakpura Gurdwara.
Eight fire tenders have been deployed at the site as rescue operations continue. Delhi Police, fire brigade personnel, CATS ambulance teams and other emergency services are working together to search the debris and evacuate those who may still be trapped. A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also reached the location to assist with the rescue operation.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed concern over the incident and said several government agencies were working on a war footing. Teams from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), CATS and Civil Defence are involved in the operation.
The chief minister said the building adjacent to the collapsed structure had been vacated as a precautionary measure. She added that the situation was being closely monitored and that every possible effort was being made to rescue those trapped and provide immediate assistance to affected families.
The latest incident has also brought back memories of a similar building collapse in Satya Niketan in April 2022. At that time, an under-construction four-storey building collapsed, killing two labourers and injuring four others. Six workers were rescued during an operation that lasted more than three hours.
Following the 2022 incident, the then South Delhi Municipal Corporation had said the building had been flagged over alleged illegal structural alterations. A notice was reportedly issued to the owner warning about the dangerous changes, while the police and district administration were informed.
The current collapse has once again raised concerns over building safety and structural stability in Delhi. Rescue teams remain at the site as authorities continue efforts to determine the number of people affected and safely clear the debris.
