The Bihar government has decided to remove the word “Fail” from the marksheets of students appearing for Class 10 and Class 12 examinations conducted by the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB). Instead, students who do not meet the required marks will have “Eligible for Skill Training” mentioned on their marksheets.
Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari announced the proposed change during a review meeting, saying that a student’s performance in an examination should not be treated as a measure of their talent or potential. The government believes that using the word “Fail” can negatively affect students’ confidence and morale.
Under the new approach, students who are unable to clear their Class 10 or Class 12 examinations will be encouraged to pursue vocational and skill-based education. They will have the opportunity to take up training programmes through the Bihar Board of Open Schooling and Examination (BBOSE).
The Education Department is expected to amend the existing rules, after which the BSEB will issue necessary instructions regarding the new wording on marksheets. The move is being presented as an effort to give students an alternative pathway instead of allowing an examination setback to define their future.
The minister stressed that failing to achieve the expected marks does not diminish a child’s abilities. The government wants students to be encouraged to continue learning and develop practical skills that can improve their employment opportunities.
The department is also planning special classes for students appearing for the Matric supplementary examination. These classes will reportedly continue for a month and are intended to provide additional academic support to students preparing to clear their examinations.
The decision comes as Bihar undertakes several changes in its school education system. Earlier this month, the state introduced a “no-bag day” arrangement in government schools on Saturdays, with students encouraged to participate in creative activities such as theatre and music instead of following the regular academic routine.
The latest decision is therefore being viewed as part of a broader attempt to reduce the pressure associated with conventional examination results and give students more opportunities to pursue skill development and vocational training.
While the word “Fail” will be removed from the marksheet, students who do not meet the prescribed academic criteria will still need alternative routes, such as supplementary examinations or skill training, depending on their circumstances.
