Kolkata, September 8: West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh has expressed strong confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prospects in the upcoming by-elections to the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies, claiming that voters have extended their full support to the BJP.
Speaking to reporters in Kolkata on Tuesday, Ghosh said the BJP was heading for victory and predicted that the party would win both seats by a huge margin. He attributed his confidence to what he described as growing public satisfaction with the state government’s performance.
“BJP is going to win. The people have given full support to BJP,” Ghosh said. He added that the government was taking decisions confidently and continuing its work, while claiming that people were happy with its performance. According to him, voters would back the BJP when they cast their ballots in the bypolls.
The by-elections have been necessitated by vacancies in the two constituencies. Nandigram fell vacant after Suvendu Adhikari resigned as MLA after winning from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the April Assembly elections. Rejinagar, meanwhile, became vacant following the resignation of MLA Humayun Kabir.
The Election Commission has scheduled polling for October 6, while counting of votes will take place on October 9. The formal election notification is scheduled to be issued on September 9. Candidates can file their nominations until September 16, followed by scrutiny on September 17. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations is September 19.
The two bypolls will be an important early electoral test for the BJP-led government in the state after the Assembly elections. Nandigram is particularly significant for the BJP because of its association with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who has represented the constituency.
Ghosh’s remarks reflect the BJP’s confidence following its performance in the Assembly elections and the government’s efforts to establish itself across Bengal. He said the administration was continuing to take decisions and implement its agenda with confidence, suggesting that the party expects voters to endorse its performance at the ballot box.
The opposition parties are expected to mount campaigns in both constituencies, making the contests closely watched political battles. For the BJP, retaining its momentum in Nandigram while making gains in Rejinagar would strengthen its claim of having consolidated its position across West Bengal.
With polling less than a month away, both parties are now expected to intensify campaigning, candidate selection and booth-level preparations. The final outcome on October 9 will determine whether the BJP can convert its current confidence into another electoral victory.
