Anupam Kher’s new Hindi play Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane has opened its North American tour on a high note, with a sold-out show and standing ovation in Houston.
The play began its Texas run on September 5 at the Stafford Centre. The tour then moved to Austin on Sunday and is scheduled to reach Dallas on Monday.
Written and directed by Gajendra Ahire, the musical comedy-drama explores loneliness, companionship and emotional distance in modern relationships. The production also marks Swaroop Sampat’s return to theatre after nearly two decades.
Kher, who plays one of the lead roles, said the immediate reaction from a live audience makes theatre particularly challenging and rewarding.
“There is no retake and nowhere to hide on stage,” Kher said after the Houston performance. He added that he was pleased to see the audience laughing at the intended moments, falling silent during emotional scenes and staying engaged throughout the performance.
For Sampat, the production marks an important return to the stage. She said working with Kher again felt like “coming home” and described the play’s themes as universal.
The cast also includes Meghna Malik, Maya Sharma, Vikas Rawat, Shraddha Mandale and Herman D’Souza.
The strong Houston response has given the touring team confidence as the production prepares for its next stops. National promoter Rajender Singh described the opening-night response as overwhelming, pointing to the full-house standing ovation as an encouraging start to the tour.
India’s Consul General in Houston, D.C. Manjunath, along with local community leaders, attended the opening show. Houston has previously been an important stop for Kher, who launched his 2015 North American tour of Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha from the city.
The production also features veteran composer Anu Malik in his stage debut. Kausar Munir has written the lyrics, while singers Shaan, Sukhwinder Singh and Anandi Joshi lend their voices to the musical elements.
Following the Texas leg, Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane will travel to Vancouver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta and Toronto before heading to cities across the US East Coast and Midwest through October.
Meanwhile, Kher has several film projects lined up, including Khosla Ka Ghosla 2, Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana and the Telugu film Fauzi.
