New Delhi, October 13: Fourteen people, including Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) co-convenors Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, were detained by Delhi Police at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday, according to their legal counsel, Advocate Pushp Sharma. The detainees were subsequently taken to Jaffarpur Kalan police station, where they were reportedly being kept inside the premises.
Speaking to the ANI news agency, Sharma said he had been informed that the detainees were still at the police station. He added that his last conversation with Saurav Das confirmed that they remained inside, but there was no clarity on how much longer they would be held.
“We do not know yet how much longer they will be kept there,” Sharma said, describing the uncertainty surrounding the detention.
The advocate also said he had spoken to police officers stationed outside the police station to seek permission to meet the detained individuals. However, he was not immediately allowed to enter the premises. According to Sharma, the officers indicated that some additional time would be required before he could meet his clients.
The lawyer was reportedly told that the station house officer (SHO) might grant permission within 15 to 20 minutes. Sharma said he intended to enter the police station and speak with the detainees once permission was granted.
The detentions come amid protests linked to the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and criticism directed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The SIR exercise has drawn objections from several groups, which have raised concerns about the revision process and its potential implications for eligible voters.
Jantar Mantar has been a focal point for demonstrations over the issue, with protesters and organisations seeking to draw attention to their demands. The latest detentions add to the ongoing developments surrounding the protests in the national capital.
However, the precise circumstances that led to the detention of the 14 individuals were not immediately clear from the information provided by their legal counsel. Details regarding the specific grounds for detention, whether any formal cases had been registered, and the possibility of their release were also not immediately available.
The situation remained uncertain as the lawyer awaited permission to meet the detainees and obtain further information about their status. Further details are awaited from the Delhi Police regarding the incident.
