After three seasons and nearly seven years of becoming a pop-culture phenomenon, Mirzapur is finally heading to the big screen. Mirzapur: The Movie is generating strong buzz ahead of its September 4 release, with trade expectations for its opening day continuing to rise.
The film, which brings back popular characters from the hit web series, is expected to benefit particularly from its strong following in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Unlike many star-driven Bollywood releases, Mirzapur: The Movie is relying heavily on the popularity of its franchise and characters.
Advance bookings have shown encouraging signs. By 10 AM on Thursday, the film had reportedly sold around 1.4 lakh tickets for its opening day, generating approximately ₹4 crore in advance gross. The majority of these bookings came from the Hindi version.
The Telugu-dubbed version, however, has seen a much slower response, with only around 372 tickets sold across 15 screens, according to Sacnilk. On BookMyShow, the film was reportedly selling more than 2,500 tickets per hour on Thursday morning.
While the advance numbers are not considered extraordinary, trade observers believe the film could see a significant jump through spot bookings. This is particularly important because the movie is expected to draw heavily from non-metro markets, where audiences often decide on a film closer to showtime.
Initial predictions had placed the film’s opening-day collection at around ₹18-20 crore. However, the growing buzz has led several trade estimates to move upwards. The film is now expected to cross ₹22 crore on its first day, with some predictions suggesting it could reach the ₹25 crore net mark domestically.
If Mirzapur: The Movie manages to collect ₹25 crore or more on day one, it would be a remarkable achievement for a Hindi film without a conventional A-list superstar as its lead.
Such an opening could also put the film ahead of recent surprise successes. Saiyaara opened at around ₹22 crore, while Awarapan 2 recorded approximately ₹21.50 crore. A ₹25 crore opening would therefore place Mirzapur: The Movie above both films.
The movie stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu, with Jitendra Kumar taking over the role of Bablu Pandit from Vikrant Massey. Ravi Kishan, Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar and several other familiar faces are also part of the cast.
Directed by Gurmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, the film is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment. Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar have produced the project under Excel Entertainment.
Mirzapur: The Movie will release theatrically in Hindi and Telugu on September 4. With advance bookings building momentum, all eyes are now on whether the franchise can convert its massive fan following into a blockbuster opening.
